Welcome to VINILO CAFE, a journal and space of relaxation and cultural exchange that springs from our Record Collection into blossoming Live Music Reports, notes on Queer Culture, Cinema and the Arts in general, as they happen from our base here in New York City—directamente desde Hell’s Kitchen in Midtown Manhattan—to wherever you are.

This idea began in 2013 when we purchased our first vinilo, at the very onset of the rebirth in vinyl sales, with the intention of creating a diverse collection of new music in different styles. The various languages and genres that make up our VINILO CAFE represent the interests of ASOBI NY as a company dedicated to the promotion of the arts in Queer style: fluid, detached and curious about creative expression in marginal spaces.

The records in our collection reflect music made globally since 2013--the year ASOBI NY was founded--and it has a strong influence of Rock, Electronic, Fusion, Latin Alternative Music, Jazz, records made by Queer Folk & Female Artists; World Music with an accent on Latin America: Peru, Asia: Japan, Africa, and records from artists based in the New York area.

The artists and the music that shape our vinyl collection [we do have CD's & tapes as well] are of great inspiration to us and a springboard for doing what we love the most: to create videos and audio podcasts that tell the stories of the artists we love, and to share the LIVE MUSIC FAN experience, the feeling of being part of something larger, a committed supporter of live music. Since music and film are so tightly intertwined (film scores, TV series' music playlists, etc.) our content naturally extends into the realm of cinema and streaming and other venues that enhance our message: essays, books, exhibitions, you name it.

Our goal is to keep you cool 😎 informed 🤓 entertained 😈 and stimulated. As Robert Kyncl, the new CEO at Warner Music Group says "in music, different sounds and styles of storytelling are ricocheting off one another, and that's bringing the world together."* ASOBI NY is committed to fostering awareness of this rich pool of diversity to a community that seems stuck in mainstream mentality. The creative world is vast and so is our potential.

Limited edition collage work by Rico.

Original photo. Digital print with recycled materials.

Stamp # 1

The brown subject [sin nombre] sucking it all in. Information, questions, desire, knowledge, images, brands, fetishes, sex. Naked. Diving into a Warhol-inspired american dream.

Stamp # 2

A deeper understanding of himself. Wishing, dreaming, working, fucking, doing whatever it takes. Taking shit from others, letting it all go. Getting naked. Intimacy and belonging. The brown body makes himself at home.

Stamp # 3

Is your work erotic?

Rico: Well, eroticism depends a lot on perspective, so what may be erotic or kinky for you may be very different from mine, but I definitely think my work is sensual, sort of tantric, perhaps?

Stamp # 4

Tantric in what way?

Rico: It awakens different sensations. Clearly, I am interested in the body. The buttock is the most sensual part of the body and I believe it's the core of sexual stimulation, so desire so to speak--at least in my collage work--usually stems from that angle, from the ass. The more important question to ask is what is happening there, where the eye can't see?
